As a part of the free church tradition, we accept no money from any governmental body, nor do we receive money from any ecclesiastical authority, in order that we shall remain free to govern ourselves. Your generous donation will help sustain our service to members and the local communities.

It takes over $12,000 a week just to keep our doors open. The most important source of funds for our annual operating budget comes from annual giving – the fulfillment of pledges from our congregation.
It takes longer-term giving to maintain this spiritual home for future generations. Generous additional bequests and major gifts sustain and enhance UUCPA, planting the trees that provide shade for the future
Members and Friends also contribute time and talent through a variety of fundraising events. Get involved! It’s a great way to have fun getting to know others while supporting our cherished community.
Those three support systems all add up to good stewardship.
The Sherwood M. Sullivan Book Fund
This fund was established in memory of a longtime faithful participant, supporter, and (in 1970) president of what was then called the Palo Alto Unitarian Church. Mr. Sullivan loved books and valued education. He was a highly respected law professor early in his professional life and was always a valued mentor. It was the wish of his family and friends to honor him by enabling the publication and/or purchase of books given as part of the congregation’s programming, and the Board established the fund in 2016 [LINK to full document, attached]. You can donate to the fund by making a one-time donation and typing "Sullivan Book Fund" in the box designated "purpose."
Memorandum of Understanding, Sherwood M. Sullivan Book Fund
The Sherwood M. Sullivan Book Fund of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto has been made possible by the generosity of friends and loved ones of Sherwood Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan was for many years a faithful participant and supporter of what was then called the Palo Alto Unitarian Church (now the Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto), and served as its president in 1970. Mr. Sullivan loved books and valued education. He was a highly respected law professor early in his professional life and was always a valued mentor.
Established with an initial gift of $6000 in 2016 and open to further donations, the fund will be used to pay for books given as part of the congregation’s programming. For example, children in the church’s annual Eco-Justice Camp who have mastered knowledge of birds might be given a Peterson First Guide to Birds of North America to reward and inspire learning. The fund could pay the self-publication costs of a volume of Bible stories for Unitarian Universalist children, written by a minister of the congregation, which is then given to each child in the Religious Education class on the heritage of the Bible. Books may be given to young people as they come of age, or to newcomers as they join the congregation. In all cases, publication acknowledgments and bookplates in gift volumes will prominently credit and thank the Sherwood M. Sullivan Book Fund.
The church will administer the fund, and its treasurer will report the balance to the Board of Trustees monthly and the congregation annually. Both interest and principal may be spent. The fund will be described on the congregation’s website and donations enabled there. The annual report will include a description of how the books were used during the preceding year and the plans for their use in the coming year. So long as the Fund is separately maintained the Church will send copies of the Annual Report to the three original donors and to Mr. Sullivan’s widow, Molly.
